It's true, I don't think you can really be a huge fan of both shows. For instance, Bewitched and Jeannie used to be back-to-back on a TV channel in Canada a few years ago, and Bewitched was always on first... I watched it, but I was always looking forward to Jeannie coming on. And yes, the shows really are different... there's so much difference that once people PAY ATTENTION instead of just making uneducated statements, the differences in both shows would be very obvious. At least Erin Murphy has some sense in her... nice to know that she appreciated IDOJ.

If people were to actually pay attention, they'd all realize the two shows are really completely different when you get down to it. It's nice to know that at least Erin Murphy has some sense...

Hope that we will continue to hear from you as time goes on... stop by and participate often. As far as characters... wow, you don't like Jeannie?!? Nothing wrong, I mean everyone has different opinions, but if I may ask, why don't you like her? I always enjoyed watching her more than Tony...

Of course, I like Jeannie but I think it's harder for a woman to be hilarious... She's lovely. Absolutly lovely. The guys are sometimes ridiculous (often !) and that's why they make me laughing. So the guys are my fav...
Sorry for my bad english...

So the guys are my fav... Sorry for my bad english... Your English is fine... no need to apologize. I will agree that Jeannie was often not the source of hilarity, but then neither was Tony, most of the time. The real person who was funny was Dr. Bellows. Roger was quite funny too. But in ranking 'favorite characters' I tend to think of which characters I like or think are the cutest. Rather than just which character is the most funny. If you'll check Page 3 of this thread, I ranked the characters both ways: which characters are the funniest; and which characters are the most likable...

For me, Tony is cutest and funny and Roger is the most funny (I've watch today episode 18 / season 2 and I laughed so much / microphone's scene ;D ;D ;D... A kind of "clown blanc & auguste")

Tony can be very cute and touching but only at times; sometimes his exterior is very brusque and uncaring. Jeannie is pleasant to watch because she is almost always so full of energy and optimism and happiness... watching her bounce around always lifts my spirits.

Welcome to the boards desir!! Nice to have another board member posting. I would definitely agree that Tony is the cutest, and Roger is the funniest... he makes me laugh more than Dr. Bellows makes me laugh before I loved Bill Daily's little repetitions of Tony's lines... and he would always add the word "yeah" to the end of his sentences... I don't know exactly how to describe it but you guys probably know what I'm talking about. I also love his recurring "Nice talking to ya" line... makes me laugh EVERY time I hear him say it. I would agree that Jeannie lifts my spirits, but I think for me that feeling stems from watching the whole cast... it's such an uplifting, escapist show and it's impossible not to get caught up in the charm of it.

You know what - you've convinced me. I 'get' exactly what you are talking about and I agree completely! I guess I was too fixated on the specific laugh lines and forgetting about the 'big picture' which was that I was really getting the charm and uplifting feeling from the entire cast, not just Jeannie.

I have always gotten upset over the comparison between IDOJ and Bewitched. So they were both magical ... big stinkin deal!!!
The concepts of the shows were to the extreme difference! The whole concept of IDOJ was the forbidden love between these two characters. Bewitched had NOTHING to do with that!! It was about a married couple, one just happened to be a witch. I like them both, but for totally different reasons.
When Nick at Nite had that "Whose more powerful" contest, I think I voted 100X's for Jeannie and was totally bummed when Jeannie lost, even though she only lost by I think it was 2%.
Let's face it ... Jeannie really was the most powerful, she didn't have to have some incantatioin everytime she had to undo a spell, she just had to blink. And HOW many times did Samantha have to call Dr. Bombay (a great character by the way). But Jeannie never called anyone for help ... except Haji and that was only a few times. Jeannie rocks!! Not to mention she LOVED her magic powers, and Sam was always trying to hide them.

Thanks theduck for your length and very well thought-out post! I agree with parts of it and slightly disagree with other parts, as below... I have always gotten upset over the comparison between IDOJ and Bewitched. So they were both magical ... big stinkin deal!!! I agree completely!! People take one look at Jeannie and Samantha and say, hey! both of them have supernatural powers! Hence, IDOJ and Bewitched must be really similar shows! That's ridiculous, and is a prime example of "a little knowledge being dangerous". I will half-agree with this one. The part I don't agree with is the "forbidden love" thing. It was a similar mindset, I think, that had Sidney Sheldon and Barbara Eden so strongly protesting Tony and Jeannie's marriage, because they felt that that would destroy the very foundation of the series. And it was a similar mindset that was why many people thought it was impossible for IDOJ to go on after Season 5, since "the forbidden love is gone!" I always thought that most of Seasons 1 - 4 derived less from 'forbidden love' than from 'practical reality' and Jeannie's actions in and affecting reality. But to each, his/her own. Also, I'd add that the married/not married difference is HARDLY the only difference between IDOJ and Bewitched. By a long shot. IDOJ post-Season 5 marriage was STILL very different from Bewitched - mostly because Tony accepts Jeannie for who she is, a Genie, while Darrin wants Samantha to, effectively, masquerade as a normal human housewife. The part I agree with is that I like both shows, but for different reasons. I do like IDOJ like 100X more though. I only say I liked Bewitched, because there are a couple - and I stress a couple - of Season 1 Bewitched episodes that I really liked. The episodes with Zeno the Magician, or the trip to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus, or where Gladys Kravitz thought she had magical abilities are a few examples of the ones I liked. Most Bewitched episodes, whether from Season 1 or other seasons, though, I found pretty boring and dull. Same here... I agree that Jeannie was the more powerful between Jeannie and Samantha. Partly because Samantha had that limitation that she couldn't undo another witch's spell. I also agree that Jeannie loved her Genie powers while in a Season 1 Bewitched episode, the one where Darrin temporarily got powers of his own, it is revealed Sam actually wanted to be a normal human woman with no magic powers (hence why she resists Darrin's new attitude that she could use magic from then on). Of course, that episode might not be accurate since Sam was in a sort of 'bet' with her mother, Endora, but still.
