Yes, I agree. Even though Tony is harsh toward Jeannie at times, there is no question of how much he adores her, and after the first season, knows better than to put a cork in her bottle. Even after they're married, Jeannie is still allowed to be Jeannie, and she can still use her magic... Tony never forbids her to do that.

Even after they're married, Jeannie is still allowed to be Jeannie, and she can still use her magic... Tony never forbids her to do that. Yup, Tony really loved and adored Jeannie, which is part of the reason I love IDOJ. The part I liked best about Tony's love for Jeannie was Tony loving her enough to understand that being a genie is part of Jeannie (heck, he not only understands, he likes it too - except when he's in hot water because of Jeannie, but even then he never really hates Jeannie or her powers) - he never tried to force her to give that part of her up and 'pretend' to be an ordinary human woman (or, later, wife). I felt that this attitude really demonstrated how Tony really did truly love Jeannie. Tony's occasional harshness can be easily excusable due to the attitude (concerning men and women) of the times and the prevailing attitude during the era Tony was brought up in - Tony only behaves that way when he's very mad or annoyed, because he was brought up that way.

Yeah, I agree Subspace... that's really true that he loves her and accepts her for everything she is... even if she is a GENIE!

Sorry, but I had to add that the relationship between Jeannie and Tony is the driving force, the key of the series... the fact that she may always be getting him into trouble, but anytime Tony thinks he is going to lose her, he is a nervous wreck. It's the love that these 2 have for each other that for me, is the magic of the show, and the reason that it is so delightful to watch again and again.

It's the love that these 2 have for each other that for me, is the magic of the show, and the reason that it is so delightful to watch again and again. Oh, absolutely. If Jeannie had not been as naughty as she was, why, there'd be no IDOJ series at all. It'd be... Astronaut goes up, astronaut comes down on deserted island, astronaut finds bottle, opens bottle, and releases a beautiful genie, genie gets helicopter for astronaut, astronaut frees genie, genie is happy, astronaut is happy, astronaut goes home. End of story. In one episode. Boy, am I glad that that didn't happen. And if Tony didn't really mind losing Jeannie (i.e. he didn't really like/love her), there'd be no storyline either. After a few episodes, Jeannie and Tony have a big fight and Jeannie leaves. End of story. So yes, the... unique relationship the writers created between Jeannie and Tony was the driving force, the foundation of the series. Made for a very interesting dynamic to watch. Dr. Bellows' character was essential too, but Jeannie and Tony and their love were, as ou say, the magic of the show and why we like it so much.

I think at least IDOJ was done better in this regard than the - other famous 1960's sitcom - in that Tony, while he may blow his top every so often, respects Jeannie and accepts her for what she is, and doesn't try to order her to give up magic, or things of that nature. Like another magical show featuring a blonde beauty I won't mention.

Tony has a lot of qualities (he's charming, honest, bright...) but he's clumsy. So Hagman's way of acting is burlesque and that's why I love him. ;D

Yup, very clumsy indeed although he is very smart, charming, and (usually) honest. I think your description of him is spot-on!

I read an interview with Larry once where he said something like, "Jeannie was no different than any other woman of the 60's. She did what she wanted to do, when she wanted to do it. The men just THOUGHT they were in control and the women just let them think it, so they could get what they wanted from the men."
Boy, that's our Jeannie for sure!! The Duck

Yeah, that's very true. Jeannie would let on that it was Tony in charge, but that was certainly not the case. Jeannie was an empowered woman... literally!
